If you currently file your company accounts and tax returns yourself using the free online service provided by Companies House and HMRC, you need to be aware of a major change coming your way.
From March 2026, the free online accounts and company tax return service will be permanently closed. This means that small businesses will be required to use commercial software to file their accounts and tax returns, increasing compliance costs and administrative burden.
What’s Changing and When?
From 1 April 2026, companies will only be able to file their annual accounts with Companies House via third-party software, web services, or paper filing.
From April 2025, company tax returns (CT600) and corporation tax computations must be filed with HMRC using software—the free service will no longer be available.
Why is This Happening?
Companies House has explained that the current system is outdated and does not align with modern digital standards, enhanced corporation tax requirements, or changes in UK company law under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act (ECCTA).
This move is part of a wider initiative to modernise digital filing, improve security, and introduce new processes such as identity verification.
What Does This Mean for Your Business?
Increased costs – Small businesses that previously relied on the free service will now need to purchase software to meet filing requirements.
Loss of previous filings – You will not be able to access any previous submissions made through the free service after 1 April 2026.
Software benefits – While there will be an additional cost, software can provide improved validation, tax support, and filing reminders, helping businesses stay compliant more efficiently.
How to Save Your Previous Returns Before the Closure
To ensure you don’t lose access to your past filings, follow these steps before April 2026:
Go to the ‘track your submissions’ page and select the period you want to save.
Select either the ‘HMRC’ or ‘Companies House’ submission link.
On the filing summary page, click ‘save your return in HTML’.
Choose where to save the file on your computer.
